Sea of Thieves – Strategy & Tips

Not sure how many will be open to sharing trade secrets, but after a 350+ hours I thought i’d throw it out there.

Useful Tips and Strategy

Fishing to start out

My crew of friends was very pvp averse and apprehensive when we first started out. We usually play PVE coop games. So we’d usually head to seapost, buy a bait crate and fish, cook and sell. We eventually branched out to chasing storms and wrecks and hunting specific and rare fish. This is ultimately how we all eventually became lvl 50+ hunter.

This strategy allowed us to engage in PVP in a more limited way , while also allowing us to shelter our gold from theft. This is how we all made our first million and bought our first boats that we’d eventually pledged to our own private guild.

Having a crew you can trust

This one is important and sometimes probably easier said than done. I happen to have a few rl friends I’ve known for over 20 years. This probably isn’t the usual scenario. But I have also made friends on steam and discord that i can rely on, so all hope is not lost.

Going with the flow

A willingness to branch out in to wherever the seas will take you can go a long way. It’s always good to have a plan , but if something happens, be open. Maybe you get attacked by a kraken , or skeleton ship. Maybe you are set-upon by a fellow pirate crew. The game is about adventure and fun.

Developing your skills

Learning the facets of open sea combat can take time. Each experience is an opportunity to hone your skills. Learn to keep your ship out of opposing ships broadside, learn to keep them in yours.

Practice boarding, practice boarding by swimming, practice boarding by cannon.

Fire cannons, board, kill prates, lower anchor, set everything on fire. Return to ship and blast holes while they are distracted , etc.
