In game the grid upgrades generally offer you more ways to play and not a flat power spike from the upgrades, the game is perfectly winnable out of the box.

Here are some tips:

• Always get synergies, if you’d like to go for a win, you can go only guns, or only Synthtech. There are hybrid builds, but I would say that’s a bit more advanced.
• Always upgrade your mechs. The bigger health pools will help you a lot.
• Go for nests: follow the red roads that lead you to nests, which will give you an XP suck, and a perk if you defeat the mini boss inside. They do escalate so be careful.

Also, the first boss charges you, so step out the way to dodge the attack.
