How to Use Symbols?
The symbols on the maps that stand in for objects, goals, collectibles, etc. are color coded, which means that each thing required to advance (often opening a door or lock) has a corresponding color.
For example, by using/combining other objects that contain blue symbols, a lock with the color blue can be opened.
