Using the Compass and Map
By Salvatos.
When you hold the compass in either hand in More Realistic mode, you’ll see a display at the bottom center of your screen. Remember:
- North is always at the top of the map.
- The compass points where your camera is facing, not your character.
- The red part of the needle points north. There’s a faint “N” near the tip for colorblind players.
How to Use the Compass
The compass frame stays still, and only the needle moves to point north. Don’t pay attention to the markings on the compass background. Instead, think of the needle as a clock:
- 12 (red) is north
- 3 is east
- 6 is south
- 9 is west
To figure out directions, look at where the red part is pointing and imagine the other numbers around it.
Understanding the Map
The map looks the same in both modes.
It shows:
- Towns, roads, rivers, and lakes
- Trees for forests, where you’ll find big trees and mushrooms
- Swamps, shown as plants around a lake (avoid these early in the game)
- Plains with plants, flowers, and some rocky areas
- Cliff faces, shown as squiggly lines, often have minerals and cave entrances
- Big rocks called “rocky outcrops” might have metal ores and cave entrances
- Lighter colored areas are higher up
Carts and wheelbarrows move faster on roads and dirt, but slower on sand, tall grass, and uphill. They can get stuck on trees and rocks in forests. It’s good to plan your route when using these.
Useful Tips
Bring these items when exploring:
- Ginseng soup: Useful during Blight storms. Drink small amounts by stopping the drinking action quickly. This helps you stay healthy.
- Chamomile tea: Helps heal injuries from falls, animal attacks, and Blight exposure.
- Water: Bring some so you don’t have to stop and boil lake water often. This lets you sleep at any cabin you find when it gets dark. Blueberry juice can work too.
- Tools: Bring an axe to cut trees and protect yourself. A knife is good for collecting and preparing certain items. If you might need to make a raft or dig, bring a saw or shovel. Consider using bronze tools instead of steel because they won’t rust in the rain.
- Flint or flint chisel: These help you start fires easily.
